Once again, a stolen image of an intimate moment between a French girl and her alleged boyfriend leaked in the social medias. We barely see anything, two young persons in a bathroom, some naked legs and her stupored face of being taken in picture.

What happens next is the classical schema: the picture is shared on Twitter and in the following hours, more than 100 000 related links on the social media. The family of the young girl try to erase the picture but the damages are already done.

“You try to defend her, but a slut stays a slut. She just need to assume cause it is sure that she loves that”. Translation of one of the insult tweets

Analysis of a lynching

Following the post on Snapchat, a screen capture is done and leaked on Twitter. Some persons recognize the girl and share her identity. #Lucie* becomes one of the trending topic with 60 000 references during the Saturday. Everyone have, of course, an informed opinion about the situation.

The insults are flooding the post, the Retweets fall severely on Lucie and reach the top when during the same day, a Twitter account – today deleted – posts a new screen capture of a message sent by Facebook to the supposed father of the young girl with the quote “Sorry to bother you but I wanted to know if that sort of things was frequent when Lucie goes to party?”.

Internet trolls just ask to be fed, some of the Tweets regarding the message sent to the father receive more than 300 Retweets. Climax of the story, rumors about the death of Lucie inflate, caused by persons posting old stories about a young girl that suicide six months ago because of the same kind of situation, taking care of changing the name to make the story more credible.

The twitter post, claiming the suicide of Lucie, taken from a similar story from April 2015 where the name of the girl involved have been changed to give it more credit.

Though some users, trying the defend Lucie, post comforting messages, insults against the girl flow till reaching more than 100 000 tweets.

Slut-shaming, once again

The terrible point about this story is that, once again, a teenager is flamed in a somewhat witch-hunt for her sexual choices.

The parents of the young girl attempt to get the picture linked to the story deleted from the social media, but the lack of responsive action by Twitter moderation team is not the only point to blame. The slut-shaming culture damages teenagers. The slut-shaming culture kills teenagers.

How can we be, personally, acting against this kind of situation? First of all, by not sharing any tweet in link with a likewise situation. That sounds like an evidence, but sharing a post even in the goal of criticizing the situation will just add a reference in Google and the social media.

Educating. Lack of sexual education in schools is one of the major issues, especially when students enter the teenage. Though sexual questions should be approached at home, education system have a role to play in empowering the fact that everyone is free of his choices.

At Mutine, we support a hedonistic point of view. Enjoy your choices, live them, share them, explain them if needed. We believe truly that this is also one key to the slut-shaming problem.
